A bond can be defined as a contractual promise to repay a principal sum of money together with the interest, also known as coupons, at given maturity dates. Bonds are debt instruments that are issued for a period usually more than a year with the intention of raising capital. When investors purchase bonds, they became creditors of the issuer. The fair value of a bond is determined by the present value of cash flows that are to be generated from the bond in future at a given discount rate. Hence, the price of a bond is calculated using the present value formula at a specified discount rate. Bonds are issued as a means of raising funds from external sources to invest in long term projects or investments that will take a relatively long period before the returns on the investment are realized (Banks). Bonds are issued by the federal government, cities, states, municipalities, public companies and credit institutions Both stocks and bonds are long term securities. The main difference between the two is that stockholders are the owners of the company with rights to attend annual general meetings and other general meetings of the company and vote in such meetings whereas bondholders are lenders of the company. Another variation is that all bonds, apart from consol bonds,  Ã‚   have a specified maturity date whereas stocks remain outstanding as long as the company is a going concern (Banks). Corporations may also want to avoid dilution of ownership interest since bonds do not vest ownership interest to the holders (Banks). Coupon is the periodic interest payments made to bond holders. Coupon value is computed by multiplying the stipulated interest rate with the par value of the bond (Faerber). Maturity date is the date which the bond issuer must repay the principal amount. After the maturity date, the bond issuer does not have any more obligations to bond holders provided that the issuer has paid the principal amount with any outstanding interest. Bonds normally have a maturity period of more than one year since they are a long-term source of finance (Faerber). Face value is the usually sum of money that must be repaid when the bond matures. However, some structured bonds have a different redemption value other than the face value. These are bonds that are linked to the performance of certain assets at the time of maturity such as commodity index, a stock, a fund or foreign exchange Face value is also the value that forms the basis of computation of coupon payments to be made by the issuer (Faerber). Bonds are also issued at a discount when it has a coupon yield that is less than the prevailing market interest rate. Bond issuers will therefore be forced to issue the bond at an amount less than the face value to make them attractive and equate the coupon yield with the prevailing market interest rates. For zero coupon bonds investors pay less than the face value of the bond. Zero coupon bonds are bonds that do not pay regular interest. They are issued at discount on the par value so that total interest is rolled up to when the bond matures as the bond holder will receive the face value amount in full (Banks).Bonds are also issued at a premium when it has a coupon yield that is more than the prevailing market interest rate. A lot of ideas were playing inside my head but I don’t know how to commence. I remember instantly my experience about fake friends; I can pretty much say that I grew up with a bunch of fake people. At the end of fifth grade I had made a few friends, but this one guy that was with us kept staring at me. Pretty much afterwards we became fast friends and I found myself hanging out with him more than all the other people. We grew very close as the days and months went by, but it didnt take very long for me to realize something about him. When other people were around us he would give me this look I dont know how to explain it, but every time someone else we knew came around, he would distance himself from me. He would speak less and not stand close to me, it was odd but I let it slide. As even more time went by we found ourselves in a what you would like to call clique. Putting a face upon our face, we assume another identity, conceal our true emotions and overcome our insecurities. Sometimes the mask we put on contrasts with our inner state, our character, our true identity. It does not fit and at the end of the day, we remove them and our true self emerges once again. At other times, the mask grows into us and we grow into our mask, becoming all but one entity. We struggle to peel off that mask but it has become a part of our identity. This time, are we still masking ourselves from others or have we truly masked ourselves from ourselves? The mask becomes us as we become our mask. Disguising ourselves, we slowly become our own disguise. Stripped of all our masks, does one true mask remain? Or is the one true mask the multiplicity of masks that we put on? We wear layers of masks so often that if one is removed; the true self is not found directly beneath. It is just another mask. Yet it is necessary to wear masks and disguise ourselves every day. On the other hand, does being different with different groups of people necessarily equate to putting on different masks just because I open up different aspects of my personality among different people? I could probably be masking certain characteristics to tune in to the situation accordingl y. I find that Ive been changing a lot, acting the charade and being the chameleon. Yet friends who havent seen me for a long time would always exclaim that Im still the same old Welson. I dont ha ve to be bothered about being disguised to myself. Because a mask worn on the outside can actually encourage my inner self to come out. People change over time and who we are is not something that can be cast in stone. We are the sum of our experiences the multiplicity of masks that we put on. I’m pretty sure a lot will agree that we all have to wear mask just because the world has expectations, society has expectations and people have expectations of us. We cant always be ourselves if we want to be kind to others or to please others or to live up to others expectations. I guess the key knows the limit and how to balance coz it gets tiring not to be ourselves always. Air Pollution (name, title) Executive Summary An evaluation of the implications of environmental air pollution on human life and the macro, meso and micro level steps being taken to change the current status of air pollution is the purpose of this site. The method of analysis used involved researching the actual hazards of air pollution on humans, what solutions government agencies have proposed/implemented (macro), what steps cities across the United States have taken (meso) and how you (micro) can take a ?step toward? solving the air pollution problem. The conclusion I have drawn from this research is that with the abundance of evidence supporting the idea that air pollution has become a serious problem, our society (individuals and businesses together) needs to adopt a holistic pro-active stance against air pollution. (picture and quote) Introduction In order to maintain a concise, yet informative evaluation of my research, I have categorized my findings in to four parts: Part 1: The effect of air pollution on human health. Although the book describes exotic places like the Amazon jungle and Saharan Africa, an often overlooked place for emerging illnesses is right where the majority of humans live ... the city. The city is the center for modern life as we know it. Yet, the city is also becoming a center for death and illness. Air pollution is a popular environmental problem that people rally around. As a society, what are we actually doing to solve this problem and help prevent an epidemic that is quietly arising out of the inner city? The disease that is becoming a quiet killer in the inner city is asthma. Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that causes tightening of the chest and difficulty breathing. Asthma has no single cause, but episodes can be brought on by a variety of factors working alone or in combination. Environmental epidemiologists are currently studying the most recent outbreaks of this disease and why inner city children are suffering most from this illness. According to the American Lung Association, asthma afflicts over 15 million Americans. The frightening aspect of this statistic is that the largest group of people represented by this number is children. The United States has an overall asthma rate of about 5 percent. However, the rate in New York City is 8.4 percent and it can reach 25 percent among children in the poorest urban neighborhoods. (statistic, picture) Air pollutants such as ozone, diesel fumes and exhaust particles seem to be the main source of the problem. Hospital admissions for asthma often rise to 20 - 30 percent during periods of severe air pollution. Clearly, it is not illegal to be admitted to the hospital, but it seems only humane that air pollution caused by human acts (i.e. driving cars) making people sick enough to have to go to the hospital should be illegal. Clearly then, there is a correlation between human acts of convenience and causing human illness. The question we must ask now is: If asthma is a disease of civilization, what aspects of modern life can we change to help our fellow humans? Part 2: Actions taken at the macro level. For the purpose of this site, the macro level is defined as an entity larger than a business and more powerful than the city in which the business presides. The discussion that follows then, is an example of an effort made by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ?clean our air? and human reactions to the EPA's efforts.
